Scanners

There are many types of barcodes and symbologies - alpha, numeric, alpha-numeric, 1 dimensional or 1D, 2 dimensional or 2D which is ideal for codes that need to be both small and have lots of information in them, some for books, others for food, the choice is extensive. Certain elements will dictate which one to use, for instance:

  1. What size is the space available for attaching or printing the barcode?
  2. How much information needs to go into the code?
  3. Does it have to conform to an industry standard?

By calling Central Peripherals you will be guided through the options to the most suitable solution for your application.

Scanner

When it comes to scanning there are several choices:

Power scanners

CCD - tethered for contact scanning, entry level

Laser - when distance matters, non-contact, standard and long range, multiple scans per second

Cordless - ideal when you need to move around

Imager - captures 1D, 2D barcodes

Omni - directional- free standing, typically used in point of sale applications

Fixed Line Scanning - for production lines

Rugged - needs to withstand harsh treatment

Portable Data Capture

It is difficult to believe how quickly mobile computing solutions have moved forward in recent years but with countless companies benefiting from the advantages that portable data capture gives it is perfectly understandable. By implementing portable data capture companies can gain advantages over their competitors, inaccuracies arising from bad handwriting and manual keyboard data entry are eliminated, duplication is a thing of the past, traceability, lower stock levels and improved customer service are just a few of the advantages. We can offer a range of solutions that give your workers an "office in their hand" and gives you accurate, up to date information whenever you need it.

PDAs or Portable Digital Assistant

Portable Digital Assistants are seen everywhere from the Smartphone to sophisticated units with GPS, GPRS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g, Windows Mobile and CE.net. Customers are realising the benefits that can be derived from these mobile computing and communication devices. Central Peripherals can offer a range of PDAs that includes any or all of the above and we constantly update our range with the latest available to ensure that you are offered the best.

PDA

Potable data terminals

PDTs or Portable Data Terminals

Portable Data Terminals are the big brother of the PDA and tend to be both bigger and more versatile, enabling it to be deployed throughout and organisation if consistency is required.

Features include long range scanning and radio frequency.

Rugged Units

It may be tempting to base buying decisions on initial cost but if your application involves harsher environments then rugged units should be considered as the advantages are considerable and add up to a lesser total cost of ownership, for example:

  • Average replacement cycle is 4½ years instead of 3
  • Up to 40% less support required from your IT department
  • Downtime averages 12.2 hours per year as opposed to 25.5
  • By year 5 "costs" for a rugged unit are almost 50% less

Wireless software

Wireless Solutions

Central Peripherals Ltd has expertise in radio frequency networking solutions for wireless local area networks. Our solutions are developed following a thorough assessment of your site using our RF Survey Service. This identifies the precise requirement for coverage and results in a wireless network that has been designed and developed specific to your application.

From surveys to hardware and software, Central Peripherals Ltd can supply customers with all the wireless equipment they need. Working with leading hardware suppliers, ensures the quality of the products and adding our expertise leads to easy implementation and brings our customers up to speed, simply and quickly.

A sometimes overlooked wireless solution is the PAN or Personal Area Network based on Bluetooth. Central Peripherals Ltd can offer PAN solutions which mean you can wireless link such devices as barcode readers to portable computers via the Bluetooth interface. This improves mobility due to the lack of cabelling and the small form factors of many of these devices.

Central Peripherals can provide the whole solution from the site survey through to the installation of hardware and software.

RFID

Radio Frequency Identification or RFID is today's most intelligent technology for managing and collecting data.

It has been in use for many years but now that the tags are becoming smaller and more importantly cheaper, the benefits are undeniable. Now that frequencies have been agreed hardware for both printing and reading is more readily available.

Static reader

RFID v Barcode

Because barcode and RFID technology exchange data in different ways they are both valuable in different situations and can often be used together effectively.

What is the difference?

Both are identification technologies which can be accessed by a reader. The differences in data exchange between the two can help you decide where each technology can be most effective. RFID is best described as a wireless memory chip. This means that, wherever it is, you can pinpoint a product by tagging or labelling and trace it all the way through the supply chain from manufacturer to customer.

RFID tags are categorised as either active or passive. Passive tags do not have an independent power supply and take power from the host reader. Active tags come with their own battery power source. Three frequency ranges are available, Low Frequency (LF) High Frequency (HF) or Ultra High Frequency (UHF), the choice depends on the requirements of the application.

Some of the Benefits

·
  • No line of sight required, can be read through plastic coatings, glass or paint.
  • Tag can be hidden inside a container.
  • Tag orientation less critical.
  • Information in the tag is more secure.
  • Easy integration into existing systems with high employee acceptance.
  • RFID systems can capture data from up to 200 labels or tags per second.
  • Label can be read while in motion.
  • Tags can be written in real time as items move through the supply chain.
  • Some tags can be reused and re-written.
  • Greater resistance to physical abuse.
  • Information available on demand.
  • Tag stores large amounts of data.
